13. The Second Harbinger
To her credit, Petraâs sister did at least allow her sufficient time to splash cold water on her face, devour a sandwich and some old fries, chug a soda, and arm up for the confrontation. This meant that approximately ten minutes after walking back into Runestone Petra was standing in the main room opposite her sister, fully geared up and feeling like a particularly unsettled squirrel was building a nest in her stomach.
She burped a little, grimacing at the aftertaste of pastrami and mustard as she rolled her shoulders in preparation for the fight ahead.
âOkay,â she said, attempting to infuse her voice with far more confidence than she felt at that moment, âletâs do this.â
Ariel had waited patiently at the corner booth while Petra had eaten and prepared. She stood, picking up her swords and strapping them in place as she walked toward the other woman. Ariel smiled and there seemed to be no malice or ill will behind the expression.
âVery well,â she said, walking up to Petra and placing a hand on her wrist.
Petra resisted the temptation to flinch, deliberately untensing as Ariel pulled an amulet of some kind from around her neck and pressed the golden gem embedded in its surface.
Fenris and the others were standing nearby, prepared to aid Petra in any way they could. That aid vanished in a second as Petra and her sister were ripped out of reality and sent hurtling through a blistering array of different worlds and realms. They passed by as though Petra was moving up a vertical lift at incredible speed. Disk worlds, strange swirling realities, all populated with their own citizens and wildlife, cities, towns, geographical features.
Sheâd seen this once before in a vision where she had been sent to the Hallowed World some time ago. This was the Axis, she knew, or at least part of it. From what little she understood, it was a vertical network of different worlds and realms all bound together along a single thread of existence. Each of those realities was governed, at least to some extent, either by Light or Shadow, and that arrangement was precisely what the contest was about, the Crucible.
Petra had begun to think of this cosmological structure in similar terms to the Hallowed World and its relationship to the Hungers below. They were all connected, all bound in some way, but travel between realms was not freely accessible and the Hungers tended to inherit properties from the Hallowed World, rather than the other way around.
The Axis, by contrast, was like two Hallowed World structures at opposite poles with innumerable more Hungers between them. Petra still didnât understand how any of this worked and why it was necessary to have Light and Shadow battle over the worlds between them in the first place. She guessed it was the same reason why nations built up their military presence, supported distant satellite countries, supplied weapons, built armies, and so on. Power, security, maintaining a way of life and fearing the other.
